Loading TMP files

To compound the problem of my grandchildrens' b******d up desktop ( see below today) he can't finish his homework so I tried to read his work which he has dumped onto a USB thingy. The format is in a TMP file extension although he claims that he was using Works. My works software will not touch it.
Any ideas how I can read it so that said grandchild can finish his homework on my PC?

click here As you will see TMP denotes temporary files, not sure if the info given in the link is of use to you,but hopefully it will point you in the right direction.

because the files aren't Works files, they're temporary files. Try renaming one of them, replacing the tmp extension with .wps

Then try to open it in MS Works.

How do I rename the file, please? I've tried using the rename function under Vista and it doesn't touch the extension.
