Linux + NVidia (no 3d support)

I cobbled together my spare bits of puter equipment so I could load a linux distro....

1.3 Athlon

15Gb hdd

512Mbs PC133 RAM

Hercules Geforce II MX (64Mb)

I have tried several flavours of linux(Mandrake/RedHat,etc)but finally sussed out how to d/l and install Suse(8.2 but recently upgraded to 9.0)I have successfully installed several apps in Suse(Real Player, java)and today I had another go at getting NVidia drivers to install. The driver installed OK(according to the messages onscreen)but poking round its cfg files(for the card)I cannot enable 3d support. Is this because the card doesn't support 3d or is it something I haven't done correctly?

I only opted to try upgrading the cards driver as TuxRacer runs so slowly, not that I need the games to work properly(I have an XP Home/Ti4800 PC for gaming)its purely to increase my knowledge of linux's way to do things, but nothing I try seems to allow me to set 3d support.

Has programs reported that they need this feature?

You may not have to change the setting otherwise, it should be default.

Oh you said the game was running slow. Sorry.

I dont know other than maybe the driver needs configuring in a different way.

Just fired my linux PC up and the exact message is...

"3D Hardware support not available.

No 3D Graphics card available or 3D support not configured yet. However application uses respectively requires 3D hardware support"

This is the message I get, although prior to installing the updated driver the game ran albeit slowly, this message box now has two buttons "Continue" and "Abort" but clicking either gets me nowhere,it simply returns to the desktop. This is why I'm attempting to find out if the cards the problem or the cfg of the driver.I also tried a newer faster NVidia card(a budget Ti4600)but this wasn't recognised by any of the distros I had tried before Suse 9.0.

Login as root

and type following in run:

3Ddiag

  Gaz 25 21:17 26 May 2004

Then try -

Run:

3Ddiag --mesasoft

Look for any errors and fix with SAX2 or any other tool you want to use, if you know what that is.

Strangly, in order for your machine to run in 3D
Accelerated mode, your screen depth must be set to 16bit not 24bits.

Cheers for that, will fire it back up(cannot run linux PC for long until missus has departed,as its got a Delta fan on it and the noise is horrendous)

click here it may be of help.

If you need me anymore then let me know.

I had the same problem with SuSe a while back, it seems to be the main culprit for video problems.
