line spacing within text

Hi to you all this Cold Sunday evening.
Can someone please help? I don't know anything about html. I am trying my best to get to grips with Dreamweaver MX. I have noticed when I type within a layer the text goes to the end of the box and wraps to the next line, but if I put a return within a line of text it seems to go two line spaces down. Why?
Looking at the design code while I type is ok, but the enter key puts a code   p>.
As I have said I don't understand codes, but what I would like is to keep the line spacing the same.
Can I do this?

if all you want is a 'line break', then hold down the shift button when you press enter.... the p> tag siginfies a new paragraph.

If you look at the drop downs at the top of the screen you will see 1 called 'Insert'. Drop down to 'Special Characters' then insert Line break. This will drop the text 1 line only as opposed to hitting return which starts a new paragraph.

That's a very handy shortcut, cheers.
