Life after Athlon XP 2700+

  JON99 21:50 12 Nov 2005

Is there any significantly better/faster socket A cpu than my athlon XP 2700+ or am I faced with a mother board change?

  Skills 22:11 12 Nov 2005

The socket A is a very old socket now so you might find a CPU that will fit it on ebay, what CPU you can go up to depends on your motherboard.

My personal advice would be to get a motherboard bundle with a new CPU & RAM. That way you can upgrade to a newer socket and CPU.

If I were you:

Between your cpu and a AMD Athlon XP3200+ Socket A 512 L2 Cache Barton would be a toss up for me, I would only part with my cash for this if I absolutely, desperately, incredibly and despairingly needed a small speed increase. I think in the end I'd opt for a mobo upgrade and new cpu, preferably 64 bit in respect of vistas imminent release next year (fingers crossed).

So is it worth the upgrade in monetary terms? No chance, not for me anyway.

Is it worth it in speed terms? Only if you've got plenty of cash to throw about and don't give a monkeys (not likely).

If your going to upgrade, go the whole hog and opt for a 64 bit cpu and corresponding mobo.

Or just wait and see how things develop, there's more than enough power in your athlon yet ;-)

Thanks guys..if I were to go for a new mobo what would you recommend?

  De Marcus™ 22:26 12 Nov 2005

How much are you willing to spend?

Jon 99, have found this link that might be of interest, but as Skills suggests, it might be best to upgrade to either socket 754 or 939, that way your mobo will give you the correct match.

That's a $64000 you mean a specific make and model, or mobo type, ie Socket 754/939/PCI-E/AGP etc etc? click here
for an enormous amount of information.

If you could suggest make and model that would be cool.. as for the money £100-200 tops

  De Marcus™ 22:37 12 Nov 2005

click here would seem a good upgrade?

You may have to factor in a memory upgrade depending on what you have now.
