can any one tell me what the law/regulations on the number of copies you can make of program media is?

Read the EULA - End User License Agreement. That will define it for each piece of software that you have.

does any one know what it is generally, as i only need it to answer a small question?

Ask the question, someone will advise. j.

It varies from one to the other. There is no general answer. Some companies allow one copy for backup purposes others don't even allow a re-installation without a fuss being made.

Copying and copyrights in computer software is a minefield of confusion, which a look back in this forum will show. There is no general simple answer, unfortunately.

What is for certain though, by installing software you have automatically agreed to the EULA (as you can't get past it without agreeing) and you must then abide by it.

Unless otherwise stated yo can not make any copies of any copyrighted material. Only if the copyright owner gives expressed permission may you make a copy.

Beyond that there is no general answer.
