Laptop wont start up or powers down

I have an ASUS notebook the warranty has run out. It either wont start or starts up,loads windows and all the programmes then cuts out completely. The battery is fully charged.

I tried starting in safe mode but this just gives a black page with a list of drivers and doesn`t go to safe mode. Any ideas?

Have you tried it without the battery? just on mains

Yes sorry I should have said that on mains it seems to be worse just shuts down quicker without the full boot up. I also tried starting with last known good configuration and tried a system restore but dont know if that completed as it didnt stay on long enough to say it was sucessful.
Thnxs for your help

Sounds like it maybe a heat problem.

Can you hear the fan start on bootup?
are the grills clear of dust and grime?

OK have cleaned the fan and grill of dust. I can hear it on start up and it goes on and off is that normal? The problem still persists though.

Check the power options in the BIOS.

The options there are LCD power saving which is enabled.(Dims LCD when on battery) and start battery calibration.
