laptop won't start

It's an old HP pavillion zt1231s.
When the power button is pressed it either starts and may even run fully up into windows- but then freezes- or else it will make a strange noise from the drive and sits there with no screen output at all not even the backlight. sometimes in the second state it produces a 16 second long beep and will at about 30 second intervals repeat this beep.

i have tried substituting a spare drive. I managed to try reloading the operating system to factory default. I have removed the cd drive to no avail I have also reapplied the thermal compound.
Once in a blue moon it will start and run, working normally for hours, until you next turn it off.

One last item it fails to charge the battery, again a substitute tried.

Any help would be appreciated.
