Laptop won't boot. IBM Thinkpad

Hi all,

A friend of mine is having problems with her laptop, it won't boot. She's had it for about 3years it's an IBM Thinkpad-R31.

I've gone over the phone and stuff with her and tried the following:

*safe mode

*last known good config

*start windows normally

All of the above just result in the screen just going back to the option screen:

"Sorry windows wouldn't start.....select from the list..."

Now i've gone through the bios with her using my brothers thinkpad as a guide and the hard-drive is recognised and no other issues noted in the BIOS.

we've since come across the IBM recovery option during the POST screen.

she's worried if she invokes this it will rid of all her saved docs and files. She doesn't have any of the CD's or anything.

Any ideas people?

Does she have a USB device plugged in? My girlfriend's Thinkpad refuses to boot with it's hub inplace (although a mouse is accepatable).

Yes it will set it back to day 1 factory settings.

Borrow a XP CD and Repair XP by install over the top of existing systm

1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER.

DO NOT choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console).

4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.

Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears.

Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

If you do a repair all previous Microsoft service packs and updates will have to be re-applied.

Your personal data and non-Windows programs (with a few exceptions) will not be affected.

she doesn't any support CD's or anything on the laptop.

what's loaded on the laptop is the default IBM installation of XP Home.

If she uses an proper XP Pro CD will that conflict with current possibly IBM customised installation?

the drivers for the IBM equipment will stay on the drive.

A repair instalation replaces missing and corrupt system files that are preventing the laptop from booting into windows.

hey i did that, but...

i can't see this option anywhere:

To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER.

it just lets you choose between recovery console and install.

after you've agreed to lisence agreement it shows partitions.

  Mysticnas 19:01 20 Dec 2005

"The partition is either too full, damaged, not formatted or formatted with an incomplete file system.

To continue installing windows, setup must format this partition."

what's the score there???

there was no repair option.

Choose the recovery console option and then use the command chkdsk /r to check the surface of the drive for errors and bad sectors
