Just Uninstall the optical drive in Device Manager and Reboot - if that doesn't work try Updating the driver (basic CDROM driver) in Device Manager.

It could also be a faulty drive or one or both lasers have packed up.

how do i gwt a basic driver ? Not sure where?
I'm not sure how you know if lasers have gone ?

I reset the bios etc, works ok now.

The basic CDROM driver is installed automatically by Windows for optical drives, which is all that is required.

The functions of a rewriter are controlled by burning software.
