Laptop stalls without external CDROM drive

My Sony Vaio laptop (PCG-Z600NE) starts up fine every time - provided I have the external PC card based CD ROM drive attached.

But when I remove the external drive (properly - via the Unplug hardware utility) and then try to restart the laptop, it shuts down fine but when it gets to the early boot up screen showing "Sony", it stalls.

I've tried re-ordering the drives to boot from in the BIOS, to put the hard drive first, but to no avail. Every time I start up the laptop, it still accesses the CD ROM drive during bootup and if it can't find it there it stalls.

Any suggestions please ? Thanks !

Does it stall for a time or will it go no further? Any clues in Event Viewer?
