Laptop powerup RIP

  SalonsPM 22:44 05 Apr 2008

My sister-in-law has a Sony laptop which she has been trying to power up but the first and only screen she gets when powering the laptop up contains the message:
'The last attempt to restart the system from its previous location has failed. Attempt to restart?

Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu.

Continue system restart.'

When the screen appears, the mouse/cursor is not active and neither is the keyboard so we can't respond to the message by typing anything in.
We are remote from each other and I am discussing this over the phone with her, but we have performed shut down the laptop via hard booting it but without any success.

Can anyone advise me what to do or what may be the problem with the laptop and if it is terminal?

Many thanks

What happens if you try and boot from the recovery CD or an XP CD?

Thanks for the message JollyJohn.

Tried a couple of CDS but the screen is frozen on the message even after shutting down and booting up again.

CDs loaded are trying to be read but no new windows appear.

Any more advice greatly appreciated.

Can you change boot sequence to boot from cd?

Will it start in safe mode.If so a system restore or last good configuration.

Sorry safe mode.Just keep tapping F8 as the computer starts.

Just tried powering the laptop up in safe mode (pressing F8 as powering up). The screen with the message on that normally appears, disappeared and did Cntl/Alt/Del only for message screen to reappear and once again not be able to move around the screen.

I'm fearing the worst at this point.

As the laptop starts press F2 to enter bios and check the Boot Order. Ensure CD is first. Then try booting from OS CD.

I would say Bad Hard Drive, but it may repair

Will it go to BIOS by pressing the right key, before it tries to load windows
