Laptop picks up wireless network - won't connect

  JP Isleworth 18:18 04 May 2007

I have just set a wireless network up. The laptop has a wireless card, recognises 4 networks, my one is the top and strongest network, yet when i try and connect it says windows trying to connect to available network but doesn't. At moment router options is set to none on security - because i just want to connect, would like to enable wep key once connected - any ideas?

Have you tried a repair, right click wireless icon, choose repair

Another point make sure the" obtain ip address automatically" and the" dns server" boxes are ticked in internet protocol properties

Yes, no difference - saying can't connect - it s a work laptop - may be that firewall is conflicting.....when click repair I get following: windows could not finish repairing the problem because it cannot connect to the wireless network
I have looked at the rooter details - mode is G&B - is that correct? channel set to 6..? and security options none.

yes both ticked - ip and dns

Is the dns client running and set to auto in services?
Try turning firewall off then and try to connect

Try channel 11 by the way

I can't turn firewall off on laptop as don't have admin rights.
How do i locate the dns client?

  postie24 20:21 04 May 2007

click start/run type in services.msc scroll down to dns client

thanks - yes set to auto

Ive got to go now,but try resetting router, changing channels or repositioning it,if none of this works, could be the firewall conflict
You could also try activating the wep key and see if it connects then, let me know how you get on
