Laptop or similar for kids

  BingoBoy 21:24 02 Jun 2010

Can somebody tell me what would be best for my kids who are 4 and 6. I want something that acts like a laptop in that I can load it with educational software so they can carry it around. It doesn't need to have anything fancy on it but needs to be less than £100 and means they do not end up with a DS lite or similar.

I think you are being a bit optimistic on pricing. The most basic "laptop-style" computers into which you can install educational software are probably Netbooks which start at around £200.

Argos £199.99 click here|category_root|Office%2C+PCs+and+phones|14418968/c_2/2|14418968|Laptops+and+Netbooks|16164797/c_3/3|cat_16164797|Netbooks+and+mini+laptops|16164806.htm

There are less expensive Netbooks, but these may be running "Windows CE" (Compact Edition) or "Linux" operating systems, neither of which will run standard Windows software.

Most small 9" 10" Net books don't have a CD/DVD drive and you would have to buy an external unit.

Hi found the following but I cant recommend one there are some at just under the £100.

I have left a Wikipedia for you to look up the OS of CE which I know nothing about.

I am sure some one will give guidance on this.

The I very much doubt the sub £100 wont have a CD/DVD drive.

windows CE is an embedded operating system mainly used for mobile devices it would not be suitable for your needs

Devil Fish Thanks for clarifying the point of CE.
BingoBoy I reckon you will have to go for secondhand unit or refubished.
Try before you buy if possible.
