laptop has lost one sound channel!!

when i plug in my phones i only get one channel, this is a nightmare its a laptop and i think its the socket for the phones because i think the speakers work ok (but are useless for listening to music!)
i have tried various phones, are there any quick fix ideas please?

and when pluggin i the headphones you have does it filt flush into the socket being firm though gentle

If it's OK on speakers that rules out software/hardware... as in the "balance" control fully left or right.
Do as audio chip says, try either another pair of phones or try yours in something else... if you do be aware that plugging stereo phones into a mono radio will give sound on one channel only.
Haedphone sockets are fragile and have to be treated gently and can also be prone to the connections become "loose" on the circuit board requiring resoldering.
Hopefully just the phones :)

i actually threw away a pair of phones before i realised that phones are not the problem!

i am going to try a usb sound card...
