Laptop crashes in bios

Hi all

I have a Dell laptop that keeps crashing. It reaches the bios splash screen but falls over before Vista loads. It is not a OS problem- it even crashes after a minute or two when you are in the BIOS config pages.

I had thought that it might be an overheat problem but the fan is spinning.

The power supply works fine on other dell laptops.

I have tried with and without the battery.

Not sure what to try next...

Try tapping F8 during boot, and see if you can get into safe mode as a start.

Thanks for the reply but I don't see how that would help. If I can't get past POST then I have no hope of getting to safemode.

Overheat would be my first guess even if fan is spinning - clear out all grills and heat sinks

also try with one memory card at a time as a memory fault may be your problem.

Thanks fruitbat

Overheat was my initial thought. How can I test it though? Seems cleanish inside

Have tried with one ram stick removed at a time and then with no ram.

It won't work with no ram

  1. Turn off the computer,
  2. Take the battery out
  3. Take out the power supply
  4. Push the power button down for 30 seconds.
  5. Reconnect power supply
  6. Then the battery.
