OnePlus 6 review: Hands-on
Hey Everyone, i’m hoping you can help me with a problem that has been slowly driving me crazy for the last few months.
My laptop is stuttering for the entire time that it is switched on (i.e. it doesn’t come and go, it’s ever present). By stuttering, I mean that it pauses/freezes every 5 to 10 seconds and the freeze lasts for between 5 and 10 seconds. The mouse cursor still moves around during the freeze, and anything I click or type during that time happens once it resumes. In other words, as I’m typing this, there is no text on the screen for around 5 seconds and then the whole sentence appears (try writing an entire dissertation like that – I think I’m going to need therapy!!)
As I’m a student, and therefore can’t afford to take it to a shop to get it seen to, I’m hoping you good folks can give me some ideas on what’s causing it. I‘ve tried a number of things to rule stuff out (system details and some test data is at the end). I’ve loaded the operating system in safe mode and the problem is still present.
Overheating – I’ve checked both the CPU and HDD temperatures and they are well within operating limits (using CoreTemp). The fan is functioning as normal.
CPU – I tested the CPU with the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool and there were no errors.
HDD – Tested with SeaTools, Windows own disk checker and also Speed Fan SMART test. SeaTools and windows own found no errors but Speed fan found that there were a reasonable number of reallocated sectors (188 - but still within normal range for model). I’ve also defragmented the HDD.
GPU – I installed the INF update utility for the chipset and no errors found with Directx Diagnostic Tools (don’t know any other diagnostic tools for graphics cards...)
Drivers – Using DriverMax I found 28 drivers were out of date so i updated them all, however had to roll them back as the computer was kept crashing.
Memory - Memory Diagnostics Tool shows no errors.
Registry – JetClean used to clean up registry files
System Files – System file check found errors in the windows sidebar that I never use.
Virus and Malware – Scanned using AVG (free version – i used to use Norton, but switched when subscription ended; about the time I remember the problem started happening however I have run the computer with AVG disabled and it still happens) and Malwarebytes
I’ve also taken it apart to inspect the components for any problems and dust build up – and it all looks ok.
