Laptop beeps on startup

I have a laptop HP Pavilion dv2000.

On startup, there is one long beep, followed by two short beeps. Nothing appears on the screen.

I've tried attaching an external monitor, but nothing appears on that either; it stays in standby mode.

Any ideas please?

That beep error code indicates a display adaptor problem.

On a laptop, isn't the display adaptor on the mainboard?

Does that mean the mainborad is at fault?

some laptops have integrated graphics, others have a graphics card. A (very quick) search suggests it has integrated graphics, but maybe some were supplied with graphics cards - do you have the paperwork that came when you bought it, that should list all the parts.

I'd guess there is a fault with the mainboard, yes.
