Lap top held together by garden wire!

  thanx 15:54 09 Oct 2010

My son has been a bit heavy handed and as a result we have a perfectly good and functioning lap top, but now the screen is temporarily held on to the base by garden wire as the hinges are shattered. Has anyone had a similar experience? What are my options? Can I replace the screen and/or base? Would it have to be a screen and base from the original manufacturer or are there compatible replacements? I am reasonably handy so could do the work myself if not requiring specialist skills.

Check out ebay for the parts required, I just replaced the screen on an acer laptop very cheaply.

I know my Compaq has spares for hinges and brackets.

I saw them when I was trying to find out what screen I had (cos' i broke that)

Other mfr's have varying levels of online support docs.
If you can't find a parts list or maintenance pdf, phone the support helpline.
