K-Lite Codecs

  tAtu*! 08:30 15 Feb 2010

Hi all

I have a query, what are K-Lite codecs and furthermore do I need them? I use Win7 and media player, I also have real player installed? What are codecs? I have looked online for a definition, but need some plain speak regarding this!

Many thanks

They are COder/DECoder programs that sit between the file and the player to ensure that they can talk to each other. A bit like a translator between languages. They are needed because different developers own the copyright to certain formats but there are many programs capable of using the format with an interpreter.

thanks canarieslover

are they easy enough to install/run? I am curious as I do like watching video. So far I have had no problem at all. Does the VLC player cover all the things Codecs do, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I think VLC download the codecs when you download it.
If you ever have to download codecs download them to your computer without running them and then scan them with your security programs first before running them.

I found K-Lite very useful in Vista as i had trouble playing many dvd's.

Since upgrading to W7 I have not had to use it as W7 seems to play everything ok.

[but have the download saved in case I need it]

Thanks everyone
As I have no problems playing and watching video I will leave well alone. Should I need the Codecs, are they easy enough to install>?

If you need to load a codec /flash player/ adobe etc, the program will normally tell you what it requires, and supply a link to it.

If you are satisfied it is genuine, click the link, if you are visiting a site that contains (E.G) porn or peer to peer software; be very cautious.

Yes. It downloads as an appliction. Double click to start install and accept defaults.

as canarieslover it auto instals just like any other software.
