Jerky mouse when playing Medieval Total War

Anyone got any ideas on how to cure a jerky mouse cursor when playing battles in this game? I've checked out the game manufacturer's website (activision) and spoken to their support people, but none of the wheezes they've suggested have worked so far, like turning down the graphics and sound. Their main suggestion seems to be to turn the resolution down so low that (480x600) that it looks crap and spoils the game. I know it's a big game but it's not as though my kit is ancient (1.2ghz AMD athlon, 256RAM, Nvidia geforce2 graphics card, creative soundblaster, Windows XP etc.) Yet as soon as I enter the battle screen, my mouse becomes very jerky and moves in a 'delayed action' sort of way, which makes the game difficult to play and spoils the enjoyment. I haven't had this problem on other power hungry games I've played, like MOH or anything.

I had some problems with metw. I uninstalled it, cleared the left over files from the reg. I re-installed and it is working fine now.
