java script shortcuts don't open

  Newuser2396 16:04 04 Sep 2003

I run IE6 under Windows xp on a Pentium 4 machine. In the past few weeks when I visit web pages, many of the shortcuts that I click on open a new window but then nothing else happens. I notice in the address bar at the bottom that all these windows begin with java: or javascript.
I checked to see that in my Tools, Internet Options, Advanced menu all the java options are ticked and they are.
Can anyone tell me why this has only now begun to happen and what other options I need to check. It happens on too many web pages to think that the problem lies with the shortcuts on the pages themselves.

Same problem with mine (Win XP SPl, IE6). No idea how to cure it though!

Try this:

Copy this, paste into address bar, remove the space after // and click Go.

Follow the instructions.

Make sure you haven't disabled all popups as some are necessary, especially when invoked by javascript.

You probably don't have the Java Virtual Machine installed on your system, Microsoft have dropped it with windows XP due to legal proceedings against Sun Java.

do a google search for "msjavx86", install and you should be back in business.

good luck.

P.S its a big download, 6.32mb.

It is also required for some banking sites, so if you intend "banking online" then you might need it for that too.

Microsoft virtual machine, (their version of Java), can be obtained here: (1.48Mb)

Ensure you have ticked; "JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled" in Internet Options, advanced. Then re-boot.

Many thanks to all who replied. VoG's suggestion did the trick. Thanks again.
