Is the router using an ASCII or a Hexadecimal WEP key, because some network devices don't like ASCII keys?

You can tell which type is used by the number of characters:

64-bit WEP uses 5 ASCII or 10 Hexadecimal characters

128-bit WEP uses 13 ASCII or 26 Hexadecimal characters.

[ASCII characters are basically the numbers, letters and symbols on the keyboard; Hexadecimal characters are "0" to "9" and "a" to "f" only, a total of 16 available characters.]

Right, my wepkey has got 26 characters in it and these consist of numbers 0 - 9 and 5 of the characters in it are letters that are all between a - f ? Does this make any sense?

That is a 128-bit WEP key using Hexadecimal characters, so it should be OK.

Try prefixing the key with $ (the dollars sign). This appears to be an "Apple" quirk, rather than anything to do with the router's settings.

I may be wrong but surely the wep key and password are two different items.
