Can anyone tell me what the little springy bits of metal are across the port openings and what to do with them? Some seem to obstruct the motherboard connections.

They are part of the emc function to reduce radiation from, or susceptibility to radiation from, one equipment to another. They are intended to make contact to the metal outer shell of the connector. If they are obstructing the port opening they are probably not positioned correctly. You may find that they are better bent back so they make contact with the side of the shell rather than the front face. In a domestic situation, if you have no nearby sensitive equipment there should be no problem if you snip them off, or tuck them out of the way.
