Internet site restrictions/blocks for children

I’m looking for some guidance on how best to set up Internet Explorer for my early teen children so that undesirable sites are blocked, both the adult variety and those that have harmful software etc. I’d like to be able to block these sites but still allow them to access sites like Facebook and Youtube. In the past when I’ve put restrictions on using security level but there are always sites that are OK that get blocked.

They have their own user profile on family PC (Windows XP). Your opinions and advice gratefully received.
