Internet security zone settings

I use Firefox as my default browser but sometimes I have to resort back to Internet Explorer because of incompatible websites. According to this Microsoft website click here you can increase security by setting the internet security zone to high however this renders many sites unusable. Does anyone know how to configure the zones manually to increase security without compromising use of the web? (Is it possible?!) I have searched on Google and there are some sites that give lists of recommended settings but I don’t know how trustworthy they are. Any help would be appreciated.

if you set your setting to medium it is usually ok for accessing sites also make sure you have anti-virus and firewall

Thanks for your response. I've got Avast and ZoneAlarm installed as well as the Adaware / SpywareBlaster / Spybot S&D combination. The internet zone is set to medium by default.
