Internet Connection Problem

My dial-up internet connection keeps dropping out, usually after only about 5 or 10 minutes, though occasionally it can last up to an hour. The first few times in a session that it does this, there is no fault mentioned, but eventually it usually says that the port was disconnected due to a hardware fault.
Is there likely to be a problem with my modem?
Any advice would be welcome

Are you connecting via an extension lead? Could be a slightly poor mechanical connection. Is there a possibility that normal landline phone is being interupted by "caller waiting" signal? have any of the connection settings changed on your e-mail programme? Has the disconnect timeout period been altered? Has your system been attacked by a virus? Sorry lots of questions, without being of much help.
