Internet connection disappearing

I am using Win7 with a Motorola Modem (supplied by Virgin), a Netgear Router. The PC is connected via cable to the router. Internet connection is fine but every so often I cannot connect to Internet Explorer or Email. Modem and routers indication lights are all ok, network and sharing centre shows no problem, but the connection has disappeared. It usually lasts for about 5 minutes then is ok again. Any help please?

Sorry not following this correctly.
Motorola Modem.Then Connected to a Netgear Router.
Are you using an Ethernet connection from the Modem to the Router and the same from the router to the computer.
If connected by cable and not a phone line you should not be getting cut off.
If you connect it straight from the back of the modem to the computer do you still get the same problem.

Just had a look at some of the Modems and they are entirely different to what I use.So maybe just ignore my last comments.
