Having obtained the necessary cable, is it possible to use the RJ45 port of my network card instead of the RJ11 port of my modem to connect to the Internet? In other words to use the network card in place of the modem.

I dont think so as the card wont be able to dial the connection.

No, get a cheap router/modem and use the ethernet port.
