Intel Pentium 4 vs AMD Athlon 64

Can anyone recommend which processor is the best one to go for from the above two. I'm looking at a desktop pc for about £400 but not sure which one to pick.

You are likely to get more bang for your buck if you go for the AMD Athlon 64.

I have a laptop that has an AMD Turion 64 bit processor. It runs very well and has the advantage of been able to run XP 64 bit or Linux 64 bit OS's and 64 bit programs if you ever want to. The 32 bit part is very smooth at 1.8Ghz. I run it alongside another laptop with a 1.6GHz Intel CPU and the AMD is much faster and smoother.

so long as you have a minimum of 512MB RAM and are not planning to play games which needs £850 min anyway.

As Mr Mistoffelees says, AMD tends to be faster per £1 than Intel, so for the same price you should get more added goodies.

Actually the screen should really make your critical choice at around this price point.
