I know this may sound a daft question, but can you install 1 copy of xp on 2 different pc's?

Simple answer No.

Not legally. You will find that the license says that it can only be installed on one pc at a time.

I understand that a retail version needs to be registered within 30 days or it stops working. So you could only register one computer.

Not so simple answer..

GRANT OF LICENSE. Microsoft grants you the following rights provided that you comply with all terms and conditions of this EULA:

Installation and use. You may install, use, access, display and run one copy of the Product on a single computer, such as a workstation, terminal or other device ("Workstation Computer"). The Product may not be used by more than two (2) processors at any one time on any single Workstation Computer. You may permit a maximum of ten (10) computers or other electronic devices (each a "Device") to connect to the Workstation Computer to utilize the services of the Product solely for File and Print services, Internet Information Services, and remote access (including connection sharing and telephony services). The ten connection maximum includes any indirect connections made through "multiplexing" or other software or hardware which pools or aggregates connections. Except as otherwise permitted by the NetMeeting, Remote Assistance, and Remote Desktop features described below, you may not use the Product to permit any Device to use, access, display or run other executable software residing on the Workstation Computer, nor may you permit any Device to use, access, display, or run the Product or Product's user interface, unless the Device has a separate license for the Product.

Thats what I thought. I'v got a Packard Bell pc with xp imaged onto the HD. I'v re-installed it several times but kepp getting the same old erorr message " 16 bit MS-DOS subsystem C:\DOCUME~1\Kids\LOCALS~1\Temp\SURFAI~1.EXE The NTVDM CPU has encounted an illegal instruction. CS:0701 IP:0238 OP:2e 63 6f 6d 26" Any idea how I could solve this? Is it, as I think to do with the image on the HD?

Any idea if I would still get the upgrades for the PC I don't register?

  PaulB2005 17:14 21 Dec 2005

The first problem has been covered here many times before and I'll come back with the answer.

As for registering it's no longer a case of registering XP you have to activate it. If you can't do that - and you won't be able to on another PC - then you'll be locked out of your PC after 30 days.
