Information req on Gateway 2000 computer.

Hi all,

A friend of mine who knows nothing about computers has been given one and does not want it. She rang to ask me if I would like it. I asked her a few questions and all I could find out was that it's a Gateway 2000 with a tower case and has a plate on the back which has MGB97 on it. The person who gave it to her said it had Windows XP on it. I would have to drive almost a 100 miles to pick it up. Could anyone be kind enough to tell me what the likely specification would be, it might be better than what I have now. Also would it have an ethernet connection for my BT router.?

Thank You.

I thought it odd that it had XP on it and wondered if it had been upgraded. The fact that the plate had MGB97 on it, I wondered if it was made in 1997 and therefore had Win95 originally which had been upgraded to WinXP. That would probably mean other components must have been upgraded such as the Ram etc.

Thank you,

I will ring her tomorrow to find out.

If its running XP then it must be at least a PII or equivilant have at least 128MB of RAM and a couple of gigs hard drive space.

Do you think it would have an ethernet port or are they a modern type of port?

Ethernet ports have been around for quite some time so theres a good chance that it will but even if it hasnt you can pick up a network card for around a tenner and there simple to fit

Or take it out of your current PC and bung it in the 'new' one.

I've fitted one of these - if I can, anybody can.

Skills, Thanks for the advise.

VoG™, Thanks, I am sure you are being ultra modest.
