IE/ firefox not accesing internet

  butter fingers 23:16 29 Dec 2010

Hi everybody, just been at the sister in laws party. Her laptop(vista or win7)can access the wireless network and internet, can log onto MSN and download updates but when I start internet ex it says web page not available. Network diagnosis says connection is OK. Had this a long time ago myself, downloaded and installed firefox which fixed the problem. Have installed firefox but this hasn't cured it. turned off UAC, added firefox to firewall manually. Reset internet ex. Any thoughts?

the little box called Work Offline isn't ticked?

In Firefox, you can find it under the "File" drop-down section.

You could try opening a terminal and typing:

ping [a valid web site address]

(hit enter)

you could use Google for example and see if you get a response.

If you do, you will know a connection to the outside world is valid and it should be as from what you've explained, you can do updates and log on to MSN.

But it would be wise to make sure.

Providing you do get a response, try:

tracert [web address]

(hit enter)

and see where and if it stops, or completes to the destination.

Thanks last chip, I assume that the web address is in the brackets and includes http:// etc

Well, I say that, but as I rarely use Windows any more, I may be wrong.

But you should be able to just ping the actual address, like this for example:

ping google . com

I've spaced the address so it doesn't automatically go to "Click Here". But you get the idea. (ping--> space--> address).
