IDE/SATA External drives.

Windows XP Pro SP3 ASRock 775VM800 Motherboard

I would like a large capacity external drive for backup purposes. All of the 1Tb drives I have seen are SATA or SATA2. Is it possible to put a SATA drive into an external case and use it with a USB connection. I appreciate there will be a loss of speed, but I have other IDE drives that I wish to continue using. I am told that my MOBO supports IDE or SATA, not IDE and SATA.

Sorry, the drive I am considering is:
Samsung SpinPoint F1 HD103UJ - hard drive - 1 TB - SATA-300

This is irrelevant as you will be connecting the drive via a USB port.

there are lots of adaptor cable out there click here

or external caddy click here

If it's in an external case via USB, it doesn't matter about your motherboard - the case will convert the drive to USB.

You will need to buy the right kind of case to support the type of drive you want (IDE or SATA).

If your system supports external SATA (eSATA) then you would be better off (faster) using that.

You might also think about using NAS box (Network Attached Storage), which connects via Ethernet, for such a large drive. Examples click here

Before I order, and just to make sure, would this combination work via USB?
Samsung SpinPoint F1 HD103UJ hard drive 1TB SATA-300
ICY BOX IB-351STU-B Black HD 3.5" SATA Enclosure.

If its this box click here+(For+SATA+Drive)/ICY+BOX+IB-351STU-B+Black+HD+3.5%22+SATA+Enclosure+?productId=30522 then yes that combo will work.

The case I am considering is an Icybox from Aria.

Strange, but both your link and mine point to an Alaska USB hub, but, I think we are talking about the same Icybox.

I have ordered the combination and will post back later with results. Thanks for the help. I will click resolved when it is up and running.

This is the one I use:

It is the 5th one down, accept anything IDE or SATA, including laptop drives, DVD/CD etc.

Looks like the one you ordered only takes SATA drives?

You mentioned that you would also want to use IDE drive as well?
