IBM ThinkPad 380 start up

  Stato 00:01 06 Sep 2004

I have been asked to look at a friends ThinkPad 380 ED. I was told that they couldn't get anything to work at all but I have managed to charge the battery and switch on the computer after locating the power switch.
The computer does the initial POST but stops for a password to be input, is there anyway that this password could be bypassed or reset?
All help is greatly appreciated

Have you tried just pressing Cancel?

This is the first time I have looked at a laptop so possibly the POST hasn't been done yet, when you switch the computer on it checks the memory then their is only an a flashing cursor on the screen with a padlock and a hard drive icon beside it with a number 1 above it, I presume this means HD no 1?
