HP Pavillio ZT1172 - can anybody advise?

This laptop is roughly 5 years old now and a distinct problem keeps recurring. a couple of months ago, booting the system up would be fine, and at a normal speed. now it seems, boot up time can take up to 30mins for the desktop view to show and even more time to run/start a new application. I have tried defragmenting, speeding up, using all-in-one utlilty software such as "Fix it Utilities" but to no avail. i have been through programs and files, clearing out unneccessary objects, with the 30gb hard drive having 10gb free space. however after an amount of time to load, the computer seems to run normally. it is increasingly frustrating and i am not sure what to do to change the problem without paying a computer specialist before consulting here.

if anybody can help, i would deeply appreciate it.

When deleting all files etc, are you also emptying the Recycle Bin? This does require emptying to help the system run smoothly.

Test that the Anti Virus software is not causing the problem by turning the auto update off for a short time.

the problem still occurs. do you think that it is just too old now?
