  skidzy 20:38 23 Mar 2006

Hello again, ive just aquired a Hp Laptop.

Problem is that the Cd-Rom will not play cd's or even reconise them. But plays DVD'S fine with no problem.

Ive checked Device Manager and all seems fine.

Installed Media Player 10

This Laptop has never been on the internet and is not set up to do so.

I know it needs updating and will be doing so in the near future.

HP AMD Athlon 2800+
192 RAM

Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou in Advance

I sounds like the cd lazer has become faulty, you could try a cd cleaner but it may be you need a new drive.

Even if it reads and plays dvd's fine ?

Does it not use the same laser for dvd's and cd's ?

Thanks for replying ACOLYTE

Some have two lasers others re align the laser for CD /DVD

If it will not see one but the other is ok then sorry but its cheaper to replace than repair.

In the case of a laptop get an external DVD via USB port, often cheaper than buying a manufactuers replacement

Thanks guys,I wasnt aware that its a possiblity of it having two lasers.

Ive been pulling my hair out over this.

Is there an easy way of finding out if it has 2 lasers without opening the laptop up.

I had an lg dvd that could not read or write cds. I went to the makers site and looked at the faqs. I also e-mailed their tech support and they replied that it was a faulty unit and to get it replaced.

Thanks Howard for your input.Looks like its a new cd drive then. Boo Hoo :-(

Even if you did take it apart you need expensive equipment to align the lasr correctly to get it to read any disk (I use to repair these for a living until they became too cheap to repair £30 for a desktop DVD rewriter but laptop drives more expensive)

Thanks FB,as the laptop is only going to be used here and there i shall wait a while for the repair. After all,i still have the dvd rw working ok.This will get me by for a bit.
Cheers for the advice.
What would we do without you on here. Thanks again FB.
