I had an lg dvd that could not read or write cds. I went to the makers site and looked at the faqs. I also e-mailed their tech support and they replied that it was a faulty unit and to get it replaced.
Even if you did take it apart you need expensive equipment to align the lasr correctly to get it to read any disk (I use to repair these for a living until they became too cheap to repair £30 for a desktop DVD rewriter but laptop drives more expensive)
Thanks FB,as the laptop is only going to be used here and there i shall wait a while for the repair.After all,i still have the dvd rw working ok.This will get me by for a bit. Cheers for the advice. What would we do without you on here.Thanks again FB.
