.SMITREM
You are allowed to use smitrem for spyaxe/smitfraud etc: goto

click here

Then click on the Smitrem.exe version 2.8 middle of the page note this is best run in safe mode

2.SPYAXE UNINSTALLER

click here

Save Uninstallers.zip to customers Computer. (Desktop or My Documents folder is fine)
Unzip or extract the file "illegal_adv_uninstall.exe" and
Double click to run the file. (Nothing is displayed when the you run the .exe files)

Follow these steps in the exact order.

1. Boot into safe mode. If you cannot boot into safe mode, continue with the steps in a normal startup.

2. Set windows to show hidden files and folders, to display hidden operating system files, and show extensions for all known file types through windows explorer;
( To do this, click on My computer. When its open click on tools at the top and click folder options. Then click on the view tab. You'll see these options in here.

3.Open task manager and make sure there are no processes running related to spyaxe. Example: spyaxe.exe, mssearchnet.exe, mscornet.exe, nvctrl.exe

4. Now we look for 2 registry values that we need to delete ( again back up the registry)

Navigate to one of the following subkeys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\SharedTaskScheduler - any value in the right hand pane that says "windows update", delete it

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellServiceObject - any value in the right hand pane that says "reload browser", delete it

5. Now end task on windows explorer ( explorer.exe in task manager and restart it by clicking on New Task under the applications tab and typing explorer.exe and clicking ok). You will notice that the icon that is associated with spyaxe should be gone.

6. Then close the registry editor and we would ask that you run the smitrem tool, twice if necessary. At this point delete any spyaxe icons from the desktop and make sure it is not in add/remove programs and that it is not in the program files folder.

Now after these steps Spyaxe should be gone. We would ask you to look for the following files and delete them. They may not be present.

If they say access is denied when deleting, end explorer.exe and use the new task feature of task manager to browse to these files. Remember to set the "Files of type" to say All files.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mssearchnet.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mscornet.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvctrl.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchosts.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\HP********.tmp example: HP3c5d.tmp ***may be more than one of these***

I've got rid of spyaxe (I think - no icon in the tray anyway) but spytrooper is still preventing me accessing my homepage and giving the url 'dns404.net'. Also a pop-up blocker from spytrooper telling me to go there and download it. They obviously install adware and then charge to get rid of it.

Can I just say that I would not advocate downloading an uninstaller from the malware vendors site!! In my opinion that is just asking for more trouble.
You shouldn't need to delete any files related to spyaxe, noahdfear's tool will do that for you.

The tool is used in conjuction with an Ewido scan and a Panda online scan and Noahdfear states;
quote
I do not recommend using the tool without guidance from a qualified malware removal specialist!

I would endorse that comment.

With regards to your activeX questions, have a look at this article by Tony Klein click here

I would thoroughly recommend using IESpyad (if you are an IE user) which is mentioned in that article
