How to uninstall left over files

  tmr 19:02 11 Feb 2007

I have an older laptop using Windows ME with Norton systemworks 2002 which they stopped supporting updates.
As I only use the laptop as an occassional portable back up I uninstalled Norton and installed Mcafee 2006 internet suite.
Mcafee did no install correctly soi uninstalled and reinstalled it which completely scrambled the laptop and I spent half aday just getting it to reboot. Needless to say all useful past restore points failed to restore.
I now have left over files from Norton & Mcaffee programmes but no functional Antivirus protection.
How can I remove all these left over bits and all the suprfluous error messages I get when they fail to start each time I boot up?
