how to turn off networking on windows xp

Hi after some work on my PC when I close windows XP the screen shows "closing network" I am using a Linksys modem and router and have my PC connected via the ethernet. When I click on my networking connections I have 3 icons internet gateway, 1394 connection (which is disabled) and local area connection. When I right click on these icons and click properties I do not get a box to uncheck file and folder sharing. Macafee tells me I have a network but I have no idea how to turn it off, or is it saying network due to the wireless possibilities re the router?
confused but help would be appreciated plse?

If your PC is connected via ethernet and you switch off networking then you will loose your connection.
