How to save desktop?

Back in the day, when I used a RISCOS machine, there was an inbuilt facility for saving the entire desktop. Not saving TO the desktop, and not saving only icons and wallpaper. Actually saving the desktop itself. You could allocate a letter and by holding this letter, start up from cold and automatically open all of the windows that were open when you saved the desktop to file. By allocating different letters you could open many styles of desktop, ie: one for word processing, one for spreadsheets, one for graphics, and so on. Can this be done in XP?

I believe that can be done with the Microsoft Power Toys Desktop Manager, which can show up to four different desktops: click here

I haven't used it myself.
