Emachines 433i, 256MB RAM, 40GB HD, WinME --

Looking at my system's information I see that I have less than 50mb of physical memory is this bad?

Total physical memory: 255.51MB
Avail physical memory: 49.24MB
Total virtual memory : 2.00GB
Avail virtual memory : 1.64GB
Page File Space : 1.75GB

If I need more physical memory than this is it just that I need to delete some programs?

depends what you are doing - ME will be OK with 256.

If you are gaming or doing photo editing you would be better with 512 Mbytes

If you hear a lot of hard disk activity when you are using your pc but not accessing files the system will be using the hard drive as virtual memory which will be slowing things down.

To answer the question, as much as you can afford or the pc will take would be my answer.

georgemac © is right, 256 is more than enough and you have a shed load of VM.

My pc will only take 256mb but is saying it only has 49.24mb of physical memory left which from what I'm gathering from here is no biggie as long as there's plenty of virtual memory. Am I getting this right?

yes

Yes but it would be better with another 256 added, You cannot go over 512 with WinME unless you use a Memory Manager
