How many bytes sent when you receive email?

A friend of mine is worried because when he receives email (but doesn't send any)the number of bytes SENT is 9000 and continues to rise until he disconnects. I've done a check on mine: typically I received mail (22000 bytes received) and somewhere around 3000 bytes were sent; but then the "sent" figure remained static.
My friend reports that his "sent" figure continues to increase although he isn't sending anything.
Does he have any cause to worry?

Sounds like your friend needs a firewall - check what is sending info across the net. It may well be harmless...
