How to get the best sound on an ipod/mp3

I understand that each mp3 player /ipod 'compresses' the cd when you download to your PC. I understand that Apple Lossless will compress the cd less but that there are still some compromises. Am I right in thinking this is why it is better to listen to the cd on my hi-fi separates than my ipod?

However my question is that theoretically as technology improves and hard drive sizes become bigger will it ultimately be possible for a like-for-like copy of a cd to be made and stored digitally or have I missed something?
