How do I view .dat files?

I would like to view .dat files to check what information they are holding, I've been told that notepad corrupts them, can anyone tell me a good viewer?

What do you expect to find in these files?

Unless you have considerable computer expertise, these files will appear as garbled rubbish. The very fact that you have posed this question indicates that you don't have this expertise so, really, you would be better not to waste your time.

I expect to find gathered traces of my internet activities, I know they store part of it. And I am not a big techie, but I am only interested in viewing the ones related to IE

Thanks Valvegrid, now I am able to see the info stored in the .dat but can I change it with any program? or deleting it?
Just in case, is for privacy reasons, because if I am able to see it, anyone accessing my shared computer is also able to see it.

Change it? No. That program will delete it for you removing traces.
