how do i transfer from pc to pc with different os

hi there, got a new laptop running windows 7 home premium. i want to copy music and photos from my other laptop running vista home premium. do i just buy a special cable/ usb 2 usb? plug in and go? i have an external drive which i suppose i could copy everything to then transfer the stuff to my other laptop but will take twice as long i presume. any help much appreciated. thanks

If they are both connected to your router, you could copy the files, or as you say copy them to your external drive then to your new laptop.
the bonus of doing it that way is you will have a backup copy should disaster strike.
