how do I open an .xml file?

I have an xml file which I was told would open as an Excel file but it doesn't - it just looks like code for a web page. How can I open it so I can input data and text?

A file with the XML file extension is an Extensible Markup Language file.

How to Open an XML File:
The easiest way to open an XML file is to double-click on it and let your PC decide which default application should open the file. If no program opens the XML file then you probably don't have an application installed that can view and/or edit XML files.

It seems I do not have the appropriate application.

I don't know if it will work in this case but you could try right click and select OPEN WITH - try one of the options - maybe MS Office or similar.

notepad++ is my personal favourite. It colour codes things in a pretty fashion for ease of navigation too!

Thanks but I think I am going to give up on this one - serves me right for trying to do work over a bank holiday weekend...
