How do I create a file association?

I have PowerPoint Viewer on my PC (but not PowerPoint).

I occasionally receive PowerPoint (.pps or .ppt) attachments from friends, but when I try to open them PowerPoint Viewer will not run them.

I have tried creating a file association in Control Panel; Tools; Folder Options; File Types - but to no avail.

What am I doing wrong?

Windows XP SP2.

When you get a pps file, right-click on it, choose "Open With" from the context menu, then choose the PPViewer as the application to open the file with and tick the little box which says "Always use this program to open files of this type" (or similar).

Try this, In Windows Explorer, Right click the File with shift key held down, now choose "open With" select the program you want to use and tick the box to always Open With
