How do I correctly install a 2 port USB Card

  missjosy 14:45 05 Sep 2005

My old PC is a Gateway P3 500 MHz with only two USB ports. I would like to install a 2 Port USB 2.0 PCI card for extra peripherals.

The installation instructions state that it is better to uninstall any old USB references to remove any future conflict.

I have looked in the Device manager and expanded the Universal Serial Bus Controllers and the first line reads as follows.

Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller.

The second line reads, USB Root Hub

Do I really have to uninstall these items to install my new port card?

Can anyone guide me through the novice mine field!!

I don't know about your machine but I have never bothered to uninstall other USB drivers.

Simply turn off pc, put in card, start up and follow instructions.

Agree with Diodorus Siculus on this. Just fit the new card into a spare PCI not uninstall your current USB1 unless you don't need them.

Thank you Diodorus Siculus and freaky.
I shall disconnect and try it.

I have fitted the Cardand installed the driver as requested.

I plugged in the digital camera in the new port, the message on the camera screen read. 'Wait a moment.'
But no more action.
I inserted the USB in the old port - it recognised the camera.

I checked the Device Manager.
It read, ? Other devices
The ? marks are coloured yellow.

Should I have installed the Driver first? then the PORT in the PC?

Operating system do you have. It has only since XP SP1 that native support for USB 2 was included.

I'm guessing your on Win98?

Did the card not come with disructions for your operating system?

if you dont plug the camera what happens?
reboot see if you get found new hardware wizzard
if not put the card in another pci slot and see if it detects if so in device manager click the pci card and update drivers andpoint tp the driver disk into the folder with the drivers if you get this is not signed click continue anyway reboot should work fine

A driver CD for the USB 2 card then now is a good time to use it!!

1. OS is Win 98
2. Yes, card came with instructions, as i mentioned above, it suggested deleting old USB info.
3. Yes, rebooted several times.
4. I shall now try another slot.
5. will also update and see how it goes.
