how do i close programs in xp

  charlton200 09:33 25 Oct 2004

I have recently gone for windows me to xp.

When I used to close programs down in me, I would press crlr/alt/del and close everything except for systray and explorer.
But in xp its a different formula, with loads of things which do not look much like before .

Could you tell me how to go about it.

Many thanks.

I've never used ME extensively but i think for what you're looking for you'll need to do CTRL ALT DEL as before and then click on 'Task Manager.'

Then you'll probably want the Applications Tab.

Highlight what you want to close and then click End Task.

p.s. I hope you're only doing this for programs that have crashed and not as a general close all. You should find XP to be way more stable than ME and should therefore not require this method that much.

So if you are installing a programs and it say's close all running programs , in windows me I used to close everything except for sytray and explorer.

What is meant by closing all running programs in windows xp.

Use the Windows Task Manager which you can get by right clicking on the Windows taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
You must be very careful NOT to end certain processes like explorer.exe, 3 or 4 entries of svchost.exe, spoolsv.exe, lsass.exe, services.exe, winlogon.exe, csrss.exe, smss.exe, SYSTEM & SYSTEM IDLE PROCESS as these are part of the operating system itself.

The safe way is to click on 'Applications' in Windows Task Manager and select the program by right clicking your mouse on it and then selecting 'Go to process' and this will take you to the relevant process.
If you get stuck then just click on the 'Help' option at the top of Windows Task Manager.
