What are you running? XP/ME/2000...?

If you are using XP Pro you can click Start>All Programs>Accesories>System Tools>Backup this will take you into the MS Backup facility and you will be able to save your file on another HDD. You can also produce automatic recovery disk(s) to go with it.

If you are running XP Home you will need to install the software from your Windows CD.

If you want commercial software I use Acronis which I find OK now I`ve ironed out the bugs.

Sorry if I'm being stupid but why isn't it straight forward to back up especially when we are told we should do it.

I have Windows XP Home and only have a recovery CD which i had with my laptop.

I have just purchased a Western Digital My Book External Hard Drive so I could back up my PC.

BUT I've just discovered it comes with NO Backup software!

I can't beleive it. Why isn't backup something that is easy and free?

Please can someone help me. Kind of wish I had XP Pro at the moment.

My Computer; right click on C; Properties; Tools; Backup Now and work through the wizard choosing the external hard drive as the backup source

In tools there are only two options:

Error Checking

Install backup:

Insert your Windows XP Home Edition CD

Click Perform Additional Tasks

Navigate to the VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP folder

Double-click the ntbackup.msi file
